India successfully tests anti-satellite weapon A-SAT, becomes elite space power

WASHINGTON — The Indian government announced March 27 it successfully fired a ground-based anti-satellite weapon against a satellite in low Earth orbit, a test that is likely to heighten concerns about space security and orbital debris. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the country’s military successfully demonstrated an anti-satellite (ASAT) weapon in a test known as “Mission Shakti.” In that test, a ground-based missile, a version of an existing ballistic missile interceptor, hit a satellite at an altitude of about 300 kilometers.

“It shows the remarkable dexterity of India’s outstanding scientists and the success of our space programme,” Modi said in a series of tweets announcing the test. Modi also made a televised announcement, in Hindi, about the test.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address on Wednesday said that after successfully completing the operation, India has become an elite space power.

"An anti-satellite weapon -- ASAT -- successfully targeted a live satellite on a low earth orbit," Modi added.

"Mission Shakti operation was a difficult target to achieve but was completed successfully within three minutes of launch," PM Modi said.

Anti-satellites or ASATs are space weapons designed to disable or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. India tested this missile on Wednesday to target live satellite on low earth orbit (LEO). Most military satellites orbit up to 2,000 km above the earth's surface on LEO.

However, no country has used ASAT system in warfare till now. Several nations have shot down their own (defunct) satellites to demonstrate their ASAT capabilities in a show of force.

As India showed its military might in space on Monday, it became part of the elite space power club. Only three countries -- US, Russia and China -- have done so before India.
